Champ Libre association sends a call for applications to realize 10 interventions.
The Festival is at the heart of Montpellier city; it will take place in the city centre more specifically in the
courtyards of certain town house. At the same time it will be proposed a path to the visitors, kind of
architectural discovery of the city heart.
So, Montpellier’s FAV objective is on one hand, to open to inhabitants, during the festival these
symbolic places and on the other hand - thanks to creators teams intervention which will present a
specific work to every place - to reveal an intimate relationship between contemporary architecture,
installation and patrimonial site.

The Lively Architectures
The Lively Architecture Festival wish answer to evolution of architectural practice which, joining all the
domains related to its culture, does not any more hesitate to assert itself in its realizations. The Lively
Architectures are short-lived and evolutionary by nature; they are every time punctual, registered in a
short temporality and thoughts for a specific place.
Such an increased reality, they add, transform, reveal a forgotten space because they are invisible or
in the contrary too much seen. Respectful of environment, they transfigure it in an inhabited
environment where the past, the present to see even the future make only one. The Lively
architectures create an environment where the imagination of each takes place. So, they have the
sense of humor, as much as the humility. When we would like to freeze the architecture in the mirror of the big History and the Patrimony, the Lively Architectures prefer for their part, the privilege of the
custom in the law of the author. They are copy left in their attitude and are sincerely delighted at any
free and constructive reappropriation.

Refusing the unchanging, during the festival they questionize our usual environment. Addressing to a
wide public, they proud a sensory adventure, offer a moved glance. They position them self as a
revelator. The Lively architectures are object of desire, envy and simply wish to find the sense of the
pleasure of the place, the city, to offer the sensitive and the tactile, to reposition the Man in the heart of
the architecture.

For this 7th edition of the Festival of the Lively Architectures in Montpellier, chosen places are in
adequacy with this historic city. One of its wealth is the presence in the heart of the city of numerous
town houses. Today, Montpellier has got more than seventy. Number of these privates town houses
and inner courtyards, are not open to the public. So, festival objective is double. On one hand open to
the inhabitants these symbolic sites, make them discover hidden places from their own city. On the
other hand, thanks to the intervention of the teams of creators presenting a specific work to every
place, it is a question of revealing an intimate relationship between contemporary architecture and
patrimonial site.

In their history the courtyards , half-private and half public spaces, have had very diverse functions as
place of representation, distribution welcome ,but today the courtyard remain anused. Divested of any
function, they appear as simple spaces crossed to join a private place. Forgotten, because
inaccessible, or forgotten because inappropriate, these courtyard disappear little by little from a
common knowledge, even from a collective imagination. They become real forgotten spaces and
nevertheless possess an appropriate specificity, playing between shadow and light, offering a
possibility of glorifying these places with few things. So, the contemporary architecture by game will
reveal and will wake up sleepy sites.

2 THEMATIC FAV 2012 – 7th Edition in Montpellier
Theme of the Festival 2012: Surprise
Festival of the lively Architectures 2012
"SURPRISE” n.f. Action by which we surprise. Defend oneself from the surprise of senses, from the
surprises of self-esteem. It also means Amazement, state of mind which is struck by something
unexpected. I do not recover my surprise. Experience a sweet surprise. Arrange to someone a
pleasant surprise. Go from surprise to surprise. It specially says about a Gift, an unexpected pleasure.
To surprise someone.

Definition of the French Academy, 8th Edition
The surprise call to mind the plurality's notion. Plurality of senses, situations, mainly plurality of
people. To make the surprise exist, it has to be several people or two at least, one for offer and the
other to receive. So the surprise proposes an action staging by a desire to share and a will of opening
toward somewhere, a stranger who astonishes or delights us.

In 2012, the lively architectures will be real surprises supporting this necessary interaction,
transforming a patrimonial architecture, motionless, static and unchanged to a dynamic space, fluid,
ephemeral, evolutionary and creative space. That’s their role, to open up new space and new
sensations, to allow forgotten places to reappear, also offering a sharing and pleasure space in the
same time. So the patrimonial case won’t only be the receiver and the contemporary one, the supplier.

The surprise will be mutual, giving and receiving both. The surprise will be definitely at the heart of the
lively architectures’ new edition, which still has to astonish more and more spectators this year.
Surprise them by the pleasure of discovery wonder places and situations. The unexpected will take
place in order to occur a sweet experience to everyone.
Through this town path, everyone would go from surprises to surprises.

Translated into Spanish by Sebastian Betti

Why you should listen to him:

With one of the decade's most celebrated buildings under his belt, Joshua Prince-Ramus would seem well-positioned to become the world's next "starchitect." Except that he doesn't want the job. With his quiet intensity and intellectual bearing, Prince-Ramus is the antithesis of the egomaniacal master architect. He flatly rejects not just the title, but the entire notion of a "starchitect" designing with a genius stroke of the pen.

Prince-Ramus is best known for his work on the Seattle Central Library. The striking, diamond-windowed structure reimagines, to spectacular effect, the library's role in a modern urban context. "Seattle's new Central Library is a blazing chandelier to swing your dreams upon," Herbert Muschamp wrote in The New York Times. "In more than 30 years of writing about architecture, this is the most exciting new building it has been my honor to review."

Having founded the US practice of the radical Dutch architecture firm OMA in 2000, Prince-Ramus served as its Principal until he renamed the firm REX in May 2006. He continues to take what he describes as a performance-based approach to architecture, pushing logic and rational ideas to their limits to create buildings that are unexpected, but wholly appropriate to their environment and intended use. REX recently completed the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas, Texas and the Vakko Fashion Center and Power Media Center in Istanbul, Turkey. Current work includes Museum Plaza, a 62-story mixed-use skyscraper housing a contemporary art center in Louisville, Kentucky;the new Central Library and Music Conservatory for the city of Kortrijk, Belgium;and a 2,643,000 ft2 luxury residential development in Songdo Landmark City, South Korea.

"Joshua Prince-Ramus isn't just creating buildings. In a field obsessed with celebrity, he’s putting the work -- and his workers -- first."

How do we make city?

In partnership with AIR, the architecture centre in Rotterdam, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) is organizing five lectures on the theme ‘Making City’.

‘How do we make city?’ That is the central question of the 5th IABR, entitledMaking City. It is also a call to everyone — governments, policy-makers, politicians, designersand the public — to set to work on the city with enthusiasm. Participants from over35 cities around the world will gather in Rotterdam in April 2012 at the invitation of the IABR. Together with projects initiated by the IABR, their plans and projects will feature in the main exhibitionMaking City at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI). In the run-up to that event, representatives of the cities will meet one another this autumn in Rotterdam during closed ‘Urban Meetings’. On the evening before each Urban Meeting the IABR, in partnership with AIR, will hold a public lecture in the Dépendance, Schieblock, Rotterdam.

5th IABR: Making City

We are currently witnessing one of the biggest changes in the history of mankind. A revolution is taking place almost imperceptibly, the force and scale of which is unprecedented: urbanization. In just a few decades almost 80% of mankind will live in cities. More than 90% of our wealth will be generated there. And all that on less than 3% of the earth’s surface. Urbanization is inevitable, and that is precisely why it offers opportunities for a future in which millions of people enjoy a good balance between prosperity and environment, between economy and ecology. But those opportunities will only present themselves if the city is managed better, designed better, organized better, and planned better than it is at the moment.

Making City Lectures

Venue:                                Dépendance building, Schieblock, Schiekade 189 Rotterdam

Dates:                                 13 and 27 September; 11 and 18 October; 8 November.

Starting time:                   20:00 hrs

13 September 2011        ‘MAKING CITY’

Speaker:  Rients Dijkstra, director of MAXWAN

Now that the world is urbanizing at a rapid pace, the importance of cities is steadily increasing. While the economy used to function at a national scale, the city is now the place where money is largely made. By way of an introduction to the central theme of the 5th IABR, Making City, Rients Dijkstra talks about the changing relation between the city and the economy.

27 September 2011        BORDEAUX – ‘50,000 new homes’

Bordeaux is a city in development. Over the coming decades the city will only continue to grow as a result, amongst other things, of the construction of the TGV rail link. To cater for this growth, 50,000 new homes will be built in the near future within reach of public transport. This ambition makes it patently clear that the development of Bordeaux needs to be addressed at the level of the metropolis. The project ‘50,000 new homes for Bordeaux’ brings together the usually separate worlds of politics, private sector and executive parties in constructive alliances. In the process, the current strategies and models of spatial production are redefined.

11 October 2011              NEW YORK –  ‘High Line’

Speaker: Alexandros Washburn, director Urban Design, New York City Department of City Planning

The High Line is an elevated 1.6-km-long park, located in the western part of downtown Manhattan in New York. The attractiveness of the design in combination with changes to the planning system made the project appeal to private investors. The non-profit organization ‘Friends of the High Line’ took the initiative for the High Line project in 1999. This citizens’ initiative was later adopted and implemented by the New York City Planning Department. Already a legendary pilot project, the scheme demonstrates how an initiative that springs from the community can kindle the enthusiasm of various parties and result in a high-quality urban, public space.

18 October 2011              LILLE-KORTRIJK-TOURNAI – ‘Eurometropolis’

The Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai is made up of 147 French and Belgian municipalities. This alliance of towns is the first 'European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC)’ recognized by the EU. This transnational area is home to 2,000,000 inhabitants and is located in the centre of Europe, in the heart of the triangle formed by London, Paris and Brussels. The Eurometropolis is a consultative body that works together to support and promote cross-border, supranational and interregional cooperation. It crosses cultural, political and administrative borders and, in the process, exploits the existing diversity as a force with the aim of positioning this central European territory on an international scale.

8 November 2011           PARIS – ‘La Défense Seine Arche’

The mission of the l'Établissement Public de Gestion de la Défense is to plan and oversee the new urban development of the 560-hectare area  called La Défense Seine Arche. Owing to its central position in the west of Paris, the area is being developed to connect the individual projects in surrounding areas to one another. In reality, however, the various works of infrastructure in the area turn it into a patchwork of isolated tracts of land. At the same time, this produces a unique and recognizable topography. The most important objective of the project is to define a vision for the area’s development that takes into account the unique characteristics of the area whilst exploiting the connecting potential and strategic position of the area to the full.

About the IABR

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) is a major festival staged once every two years in Rotterdam. But the IABR is much more than that. It is active throughout the year as an international platform for architecture. The IABR believes that architecture can contribute to providing solutions for the way in which we live together. It therefore links knowledge, ideas, people and urban problems at home and abroad to one another. Before the event starts, hundreds of designers, planners and public officials from all over the world conduct research and share their expertise. That occurs largely behind closed doors, but sometimes this research is made visible in the form of lectures, debates, publications or films, often made in partnership with other parties. For this lecture series the IABR has teamed up with AIR. As the architecture centre of Rotterdam, the AIR has a mission to enhance our understanding of the quality of architecture in the city and region. The lecture series will therefore have a clear link with Rotterdam.

The 5th IABR: Making City opens on 19 April 2012.
